Broken chains, single earrings or jewellery that is no longer worn are treated as “scrap gold”. Knowing how the price is determined when selling these items makes it easier to make the right decision.

How is the price determined?

For scrap gold, what counts is the amount of pure gold the item contains. The item is weighed, its karat is determined and its pure gold value is calculated on the basis of the current gold price. The workmanship fee paid when the jewellery was bought is generally not reflected in the sale.

Determining the karat

The karat of the item is determined with measuring devices or traditional methods. Ask for the measuring and weighing to be done in front of you.

Before the sale

  • If you have invoices for your items, bring them with you.
  • Follow current gold prices.
  • If you are selling more than one item, ask for the items to be weighed one by one.
  • Have your ID with you for the transaction.

Choose a registered business

Make your sale at a registered, well-known business and ask for a document for the transaction. You can browse the jewellers and goldsmiths registered with our association in the Member Directory.
