Fake products, or products of a lower karat than declared, cause both financial loss and a loss of trust. With a few simple precautions you can greatly reduce this risk.
Recognise risky situations
- Offers to sell clearly below the current market price
- Reluctance to issue an invoice
- Missing or illegible hallmarks, or hallmarks that do not match the product
- “Urgent sale” offers made on the street, on social media or by people you do not know
Do not rely on simple tests
Home tests such as using a magnet or biting do not give conclusive results. If you have doubts about a product, the safest course is to have its karat measured by a jeweller.
Buy from a reliable place, with an invoice
Shop at a registered business and always obtain an invoice stating the type, karat and weight of the product. You can find the jewellers registered with our association in the Member Directory and check a business’s registration on the Trust Verification page.
If you encounter a suspicious situation
You can report a suspected fake or low-karat product to our association through the Complaint Desk. You can follow our current warnings on the Announcements page.
